"Bit of ciúnas for the musician" - Dearbhla Scallon

Updated: Sep 14, 2021

Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Dearbhla Scallon is a growing figure within the Irish traditional music scene. With All Ireland titles to her name, she is already an established and recognised musician throughout the country. The sky is the limit with this one (she's also singing me down the aisle, I'm booking her now).

Name: Dearbhla Scallon

Age: 21

Instrument: Voice, flute, whistle

Dream gig to perform: I would love to some day have my own gig at the All Ireland Fleadh, having been to so many over the years it would be amazing to do one myself.

What would you consider to be your greatest musical achievement?

My proudest solo achievement would be winning solo singing in Scór Sinsir 2018 after competing for many years. My proudest group achievement is without doubt winning Siansa Gael Linn with Spleodar and the opportunities we have had as a group since.

You’re having dinner with three of your musical heroes (dead or alive), who are they? Most importantly, where would you take them?

Eithne Ní Uallacháin, June Mc Cormack and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh. All 3 are fantastic examples of outstanding female musicians and I would have to bring them to An Sibín Ceoil, Dún na nGall.

How would you describe your music in one word?

Intimate

Who are you listening to right now?

I have been enjoying Jarlath Henderson's more modern approach to traditional songs and I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of new music from one of the most talented vocalists of our generation - Etaoin Rowe

When it is safe to do so I'll want nothing more than to hear this gorgeous voice in person again, as I'm sure many will too. Until then, keep an eye out online!
